Reflections of MDH Summer Week 2008

It has been exciting this week to be able to be take advantage of the expertise of the

speakers. The information provided will serve to assist me in my preparation for

my internship. Just as I have studied in my classes, acknowledging that there is a different approach to teaching adults will help me prepare my lessons. While adult students will need informational direction in order to begin a class, they may not need continued guidance in order to complete their assignments. Keeping this mind though, I will strive to encourage them all along the way. Our summer week presentations also have directed me to include peer teaching, sharing experiences, and creative challenges in my internship experience.

I found the stages of cognitive development interesting and expect to incorporate these thoughts when I interact with my students. This theory of development will be useful to me as I deal personally with the students in the classroom as well as in the clinic. It will serve to make me aware of the differences in student as they approach and comprehend their assignments. This way I can (attempt to) tailor my response to requests for assistance or alter a teaching delivery to reach students who may not respond to my particular teaching methods.

When I reflect back on the ideas presented this week, I do realized how I have been using these techniques with my private practice patients for some time. I see a wide variety of people and adapt my oral health treatments and education to the particular style of the person. I have seen many of my patients for years and have witnessed their circular route through their life stages unaware that this relates to the cognitive theory.

I will leave this week with my brain filled with new thoughts and perspectives that will continue to rattle around for some time. Thanks everyone.

Dr. Cox's Presentation 7.15.08

I really enjoyed our class today with Dr. Cox. I think we are all in such a unique situation to be able to teach undergrad students while we are students ourselves. I've found that I've started to use so much of the information that I've learned in the MDH program already in my clinical teaching. I get excited about implementing all of the theories and strategies we get to learn.

Informative Day!

Wow! What an informative and interesting day today. I am learning that I really enjoy about learning. Dr. Cox did a great job presenting and kept the day entertaining.

Student Approach

The information shared this morning was a great motivator for remembering the reason for teaching as well as being a classroom confidence-builder. Acknowledging that students bring different visions and views into the classroom due to their unique experiences reminds us that the ones they have with us as educators will shape their future views and visions as well as their education.

Reflection on Monday

The new teaching methods we learned today will help me to reach my students when they encounter the rocks, stumps, and turns that get in their way on their trip through dental hygiene school.

Welcome to our collaborative space

Greetings from metro-New York City.

I am Dr. Kathleen P. King, professor of adult education at Fordham University.
You likely have heard that I will be your Monday and Friday keynote speaker for Dental Hygiene Summer Week July 2008 at UT Memphis.

This space is set aside as an online collaborative environment for you to share information with the world about your learning. You will see that on your Thursday schedule you are asked to draft a reflective essay. I am asking you to post a public version of your reflection here in the blog space.

Why? This will be an opportunity to "kickstart" our Friday discussion, a platform for you to learn what your colleagues are learning so you can engage in further discussion together, and as an vital example for you and other educators to see how new media can be an effective tool in adult learning.

Rather than only working as content gatherers and consumers; we are truly engaging in being content creators in this global collaborative activity.

Join me, won't you, as we share our thoughts about our learning this week at UT.

Very best, your virtual speaker and fond colleague,

Dr. Kathleen P. King
